Exhibition text / English
We often assume that knowing comes before seeing. More often, the opposite is true: we are first drawn to a shaft of light, a certain distance, or the pause of a person, and only later begin to understand what it was that we saw.
This exhibition cannot be taken in from a single position. Visitors need to move closer, step back, turn, climb the stairs, pass through doors and windows, and move around columns and the turns of the walls. Looking happens not only within the photographs, but also as the body moves through the space.
These photographs come from roads, streets, rooms, people close to us, and moments that later became difficult to explain. When they were made, we may not have known why we raised the camera. Before words could take shape, the image was already there.
The nine photographers are mostly at different points between studying, graduating, working, and preparing for whatever comes next. Photography is not something separate from life; it takes shape slowly amid journeys, relationships, and the uncertainties of the everyday. We live and photograph at the same time, recognising only in retrospect the clues we did not notice then.
These works come from different times and personal experiences, and they were not made around a shared theme. For this exhibition, we have temporarily set aside their original sequences, using scale, spacing, density, and placement to establish new relationships between them. The arrangement is more than a way of displaying photographs; it becomes another way of seeing.
A photograph that once seemed silent begins to echo when another is placed beside it. Two unrelated scenes may complement, interrupt, or redirect one another. A road meets a stranger’s room. A patch of shadow follows a relationship. A figure seen from behind summons a memory that does not belong to them. The photographs have not changed, but the gaze has rearranged their positions.
Photography cannot preserve life in full. It leaves only fragments: a gesture, a distance, a surface touched by light. We may never know what happened beyond the frame, and what we see within it does not belong to a single interpretation. Between what we see and what we know, there is always a gap that cannot be completely filled.
People leave, relationships change, and the emotions of a particular moment slowly fade. Yet photographs remain, taking on different meanings within a new sequence.
This exhibition does not seek a final answer. It simply allows these photographs to meet, briefly, in this place.
The photographs remain where they are. Perhaps looking truly begins only after we leave.
